Krk is located
in Kvarnerski zaljev (the Quarner
Bay), in the immediate vicinity
of the city and port of Rijeka.
Although it is located in the
north, the Mediterranean climate
gives it warm summers and mild
winters which is one of its important
tourist trump-cards.
In winter the
temperature falls to 5 degrees
Centigrade, for a few days it
can fall even below zero, with
the exception of the depression
by the lake of Ponikve where the
temperature can be much lower
than on the rest of the island,
as low as -15.
The temperature
of the sea in winter decreases
to about ten degrees and when
the new bathing season is in question,
old islanders used to say "
alaways on the first Sunday od
May", which translates into
degrees Celsius as 16 to 19, depending
on the year. In summer (July,
August), the temperature of the
see is about 24 degrees.
